Men's Jacket Size Chart: How to Measure for the Perfect Fit

Men's Jacket Size Chart: How to Measure for the Perfect Fit

By Cuir Jackets Editorial · Published August 4, 2026 · 7 min read

Getting a jacket size wrong costs you money and time. Getting it right takes three measurements and two minutes.

This guide covers the men's jacket size chart, how to take each measurement correctly, how to convert European sizes to US, and why leather jackets need slightly different sizing logic from other outerwear.

Quick Answer
  • Measure your chest, shoulders, and sleeve length — in that order
  • Measure over a mid-weight layer, not bare skin
  • EU jacket sizes run approximately 10 higher than US (US 44 = EU 54)
  • For leather jackets: get the shoulders right first — they cannot be altered
  • Cuir Jackets are available XS through 5XL — size charts on every product page

How to Take the Three Key Measurements

Every jacket size depends on three numbers: chest, shoulder width, and sleeve length. Take all three before looking at any size chart.

Men's jacket size chart showing how to measure chest, shoulders and sleeve length for the perfect fit

1. Chest Measurement

  • Wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, directly under your arms
  • Keep the tape horizontal across your back
  • Measure over a mid-weight layer — a t-shirt plus a light knit — not bare skin
  • The tape should be snug but not compressing — you should be able to slide two fingers underneath
  • Record the number in inches

Measuring bare will give you a chest size that produces a jacket too small for real-world wear. Always measure over what you'd typically wear under the jacket.

2. Shoulder Width

  • Measure from the edge of one shoulder across the back of your neck to the edge of the other
  • This is the most critical measurement for leather jackets specifically — shoulder seams in leather cannot be adjusted
  • The jacket's shoulder seam should sit exactly at the natural shoulder bone, not hanging down the arm and not sitting up on the muscle

3. Sleeve Length

  • Measure from the centre back of your neck, over your shoulder, down to your wrist bone
  • Keep your arm slightly bent as you measure — this is how you'll actually wear the jacket
  • Sleeve length in leather jackets can be shortened by a tailor but cannot be lengthened — if in doubt, choose the longer option

Leather Jacket Sizing - What's Different

Leather jackets need one extra consideration that fabric jackets don't:

  • Shoulders first, always. The shoulder seam must sit exactly at the natural shoulder point. If it overhangs the arm, the jacket is too big. This is the one measurement that cannot be corrected by a tailor in leather.
  • Leather doesn't stretch at the shoulders or chest. It softens with wear, becoming more supple and conforming to your movement, but the chest circumference stays constant. Buy tight in the chest and it stays tight.
  • Size up for layering. If you wear a medium-weight knit under a jacket regularly, order one size up from your chest measurement. Trying to force a cable-knit under a perfectly-fitted leather jacket damages both the lining and the zip.
  • Sleeves can be shortened. If the sleeve length is slightly long, a leather tailor can shorten it. Always choose the larger sleeve length option if between sizes.

Sizing by Body Type

Athletic Build (Broad Shoulders, Slim Waist)

  • Size by shoulder measurement, not chest
  • Look for "athletic cut" or "tapered fit" options
  • Never size down to fit the waist, a jacket too narrow in the shoulders will restrict movement and look wrong
  • Many leather jacket brands offer alterations at the waist; shoulders cannot be altered

Taller Men (6'2"+)

  • Check the body length measurement — standard jacket lengths are cut for 5'10"–6'1"
  • Look for "tall" sizing or brands that specify body length in their charts
  • A jacket that's too short will ride up when you raise your arms and look disproportionate

Broader Chest, Standard Shoulders

  • Size by chest and accept that the shoulders may be slightly wide
  • A small shoulder seam overhang (less than 0.5 inch) is preferable to a jacket too tight in the chest

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure myself for a jacket?

Take three measurements: chest (wrap tape around the fullest part, under your arms), shoulders (across the back from shoulder point to shoulder point), and sleeve length (from centre back of neck, over the shoulder, to the wrist).

Measure over a mid-weight layer. Use these measurements against the brand's specific size chart.

What is a size 44 jacket in US sizing?

A size 44 jacket corresponds to a 44-inch chest measurement. In EU sizing this is a 54. In letter sizes it falls in the Large to XL range depending on brand.

How do I convert European jacket sizes to US sizing?

Subtract 10 from the EU size to get the approximate US equivalent: EU 50 = US 40, EU 52 = US 42, EU 54 = US 44, EU 56 = US 46. UK sizing for men's jackets matches US sizing directly.

Should I size up for a leather jacket?

Order your usual size for a fitted look. Size up one if you plan to layer a medium-to-heavy knit underneath regularly. Leather does not stretch in the chest or shoulders, the shoulder seam fit must be correct at purchase.

How do I know if a jacket is too big?

The jacket is too big if the shoulder seam drops below the natural shoulder point onto the upper arm, if there is significant fabric bunching at the chest or back, or if sleeve length extends past the wrist bone.

What is the difference between jacket size and suit jacket size?

Suit jackets are cut slimmer and designed for dress shirts with minimal layering. Casual leather jackets have more room through the body and shoulders.

A US 40R suit jacket wearer might wear a Medium or Large in a casual leather jacket. Always check chest measurements against the specific brand's size chart.

All Cuir Jackets come with full size charts, chest, shoulder, sleeve, and body length — on every product page. Free returns on all USA and Canada orders mean no risk in finding your fit. All styles available XS through 5XL.
